I Know They Meant Well...

And thanks for the gift.

Buuuuuuut...

it makes me itch...

And detergent IS quite expensive. However, I find that 2X Ultra All, makes me all scratchy. In places where there ought not be THAT kind of itch...

By process of elimination it has to be the detergent...

++The Nutcracker...++

Nutcracker 11 09So...

My good friend Mr W has a very talented wife - an excellent violinist who happens to play for the Royal Ballet Orchestra. Well she generously offered to get us discounted tickets for The Nutcracker at the Hippodrome, Birmingham.

So we met her in the extravagant entrance hall, and exchanged cash for tickets in a very clandestine deal!! Quite funny really!

We had lower Circle seats, not bad at all. Me, The Boss, Dr.agon and the Small Monstrosity went. the SM was REALLY moaning about going but we were determined tat he was to have the experience despite his protestations.

I've never been to the ballet before but was very open to it, especially this one. The staging was amazing, the costumes brilliant!
Now.
Considering I'd been out the morning for 18miles I thought I was doing well keeping eyes open!LOL! The first half had me glued to the stge, the second had me nodding a little, I must confess, but still I loved the dancing, the strength, the poise and the sheer effortlessness of every action.
It reminded me of watching my favourite runners and how they seem to be running effortlessly and then you realise that they're running sub 5 minute miles. Same with the dancing. Everything looked in slow motion almost then you realised that it was only that way because of the sheer strength and control of movement. The jumps seem to last for ever, and the landings seemed cushioned endlessly.

I loved it and want to go now and see Swan Lake in June.

Strangely The Boss weren't so keen on it. So it looks like me and dr.agon will be going.

As for the Small Monstrosity..."I liked Starlight better!" and my personal favourite..

"Dad, when are they going to start singing?!"

I have a 19 inch tv sitting on a 4 wheel dolly in my kitchen.

Further, if I reassemble the credenza that currently resides in my storage room down the hall, (it too is sitting on a furniture dolly) that I might be able to re-arrange said storage room in a more productive manner.

So, as soon as I make the bed up, (I've stripped it) me and my trusty cordless screw driver will be making a trip down the hall to do just that.

Why did they discontinue the Rian tables?

The damned dog hasd his way with mine. Now the chrome legs are all rusted at the bottom, not to mention, ugh.

And they don’t make the damned table anymore. Would have been perfect with my sofa.

Have too see what I can do with the one I have. *sigh* Damned animals.

Most every time after I come back from a run where I get an overwhelming odor of ammonia which only I can smell. I've googled it and it's because my body is looking for energy in other sources and chooses amino acids. Then there was stuff about the kidneys, urea, nitrogen...etc. I don't quite eat as healthily (college student) as I used to this past year, but I don't eat fast food, overindulge in snack foods, etc. I'm vegetarian as well so my diet really consists of carbs which I would figure are great for when I exercise (run/yoga/bike). I eat this oatmeal concoction every morning (oatmeal+brown sugar(I add)+syrup(I add)+raisins+fiber-ful cereal that changes every now again). This is usually eaten with a cup of coffee that I don't end up finish till around two hours later.... Anyway, that's all I had today before my run. I didn't drink but about ten sips of my coffee, drank about a water bottle of water before taking off (an hourish after eating). Was this not enough food for a 4.36mi, 9:10pace run?

I appreciate any help or ideas.

I don't know what to think about my ankle. :\

As a new runner who's never had a running-related injury other than shin splints and my always bum knees, I was hoping you all might be able to provide some insight.. I don't know how a stress fracture feels in comparison to a sprain, etc.

-I hurt it yesterday during my 5 mile race. I don't know *how* -- it just started hurting somewhere around mile 4, but the pain was tolerable enough to run through. It wasn't until after the fact - when I was walking around the parking lot to cool down - that I realized how bad the pain is. 24 hours later, it's no better/worse.

-I have no recollection of twisting my ankle, really, but it was a very rocky trail run on a path in the woods around a lake.

-It's mostly on the outside of my ankle on my right foot.

-if I'm just sitting here, it doesn't necessarily hurt. It's onlyw hen I move it in certain directions that it hurts.

-Walking hurts pretty bad. And yet I can stand on my right foot witha ll of my weight on it and not feel it. It's not until about halfway through the step that it hurts.

I know you all aren't doctors; just curious if this sounds like a sprain/strain or something more serious. :\

I'm RICE-ing it for now. My only physical plan for today was yoga and only plan for tomorrow was BodyPump - so at least I'm not missing out on a long run or anything. Hopefully by Tuesday I'll be ok :\

Wet Weather Running Love

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
It's pissing down with rain here in London, with some nasty old winds. So I was pretty much dreading going out for my Sunday long run. But the rain is never that bad, is it? There's a level of wet you reach beyond which you don't care. And to be honest, defying normal social codes and getting so wet that even your eyelashes are dripping can actually be a lot of fun. Suffice to say I had one of those runs that made me fall in love with running all over again. At the half way point two girls huddled in a bus shelter applauded and cheered as I ran past and I literally felt on top of the world...

But actually, the very best bit comes afterwards. It's the warm shower and muscles unwinding. It's the comfy sweater as you peer out into the wet afternoon. And it's the well-earned, proud bowl of steaming soup.

great day

Good idea? Stupid idea?

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 6:29 AM
Or neutral idea?

There's a 5K the day before I will be running the Las Vegas R&R Half Marathon. My friend Mary has been bitten by the walking bug, and will probably enter it, but to walk.

Would it be a good idea, bad idea, or neutral for me to walk it with her?

Favorite Marathon Training Resource?

Hi everyone

After finishing my second half marathon I decided I wanted to try a full and that I should also probably train for it. So tell me what resources you've found especially helpful in your training.

++Long run Sunday...Top Gear Wet!++

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
That'll do!

18.8 miles at an av 7:32.
Should have been 7:48 so i'm pleased with that. New-ish course as well. Included a 2 mile-ish incline at the end of the run that was okay.

Weather was cold and wet! This was the first of the winter runs that I wore gloves, thin ones mind! But it was very Top Gear wet! I got soaked but one of the advantages of running for hours is that you can also dry out, which I nearly did.
Events in the run....?
...9 miles in I was delighted to be completely SOAKED by Mr White Van man -prat!
..uphilll at mile 17 - I was very appreciative of the woman who couldn't control her dog on a long lease when I was running uphill. It had a lunge I had a shout at her and her stupid dog!
...mile 12 had some gel. Proper amount. Had the double serving ones with the screw cap. So called 'Tropical' flavour! As gels go they're not bad and they do help -a lot!
...mile 15 had some more gel to get me up the hill on the last stretch. Again went down well and did help. I think this is also going to be a major factor in the ol' marathon training plan - the idea of sustenance on the lonnger runs, and the race itself. I like the idea of these screw cap double serving gels (EAS). There seems to be enough there for me in one handy pouch. Beats taking lotsof smaller SIS type gels.

I am now off to eat my own body weight in porridge, follwed by banana and pancakes and copious buckets of black coffee! This is a vane attempt to replace the 2,256 calories I burnt during the run!!

All good though!
Sooo... I just got a Garmin 305!! My parents wanted to get me one for Christmas and told me to pick it out, so I ordered it on amazon when they were 53% off. I got the one with a heart rate monitor for only $139. Whee! So I've spent the afternoon playing with it and will hopefully take it out for its first run tomorrow. I don't want to be the girl with a million "i have a new Garmin" questions but I did want to ask you guys two quick things about it:

1) Someone previously asked whether the 305 can be worn in the rain. It looks like two people said yes it's fine and one person said it gets rain inside. It's supposed to rain tomorrow but I'm dying to take it out for a spin... do I seriously have a 1 in 3 chance of rain-ruining it?? Is it in fact *supposed* to be water resistant? Would you risk wearing it if it's rainy, or no?

2) Where do you ladies put the heart rate monitor strap relative to your sports bra?? I tried it on directly under the band of my sports bra and it just seems really... tight and uncomfortable. Will I get an accurate reading if I place it lower on my torso so it's not under the band of/interfering with my sports bra? Is there some other way I'm supposed to be wearing this thing?

Also, one non-Garmin related question for the fellas while I'm posting... my (male) running buddy is really tall and skinny and has been shopping for warm tights for winter running, but hasn't been able to find any pairs that are long enough. Regular tights seem to hit him mid-calf rather than coming down to the ankles. Do you guys know of any cold-weather tights that you can buy in a long length? He's looking for tights rather than pants. There have to be other tall skinny male runners out there... there *must* be some company that makes long lengths, or maybe a brand that just happens to run long for the regular fit? I told him I'd check in with you guys...

Thanks everyone!

Is it possible for my stamina to deteriorate greatly after not running for 2 weeks?

The first week I was busy to run. The second week I went on a tough mountain hike.

2 days after the hike I started running again. But I can only run half of what I used to, even though I'm running at a slower speed.

Could it be that my body is still worn out from the hike, or has my stamina really worsened?

After my 30 min 3 miles run about a week ago I took some time off to rest. And also because I was a little scared I wouldn't improve since that run kicked my butt.

I promised myself I would run today before I could go see my guy after work...3 miles in 28:36! Which also kicked my butt!

The last mile I got off pace because this woman decided she might want to run me over and it was difficult to get back my breath and into the zone.

Race Report: ERC Turket Trot 5K

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 2:21 PM
On Thanksgiving, I did my third race ever (my second 5K), the Erie Runner's Club Turkey Trot in Erie, PA. I had originally intended to do the 10K, but my training schedule got a bit truncated from starting grad school, so I settled for running the 5K. My goal: sub-40.
